Before your first real customer

Five checks, then a test order you cancel.

Your shop works. Before you share the link with real customers, check these once. Each takes a minute.

1. Your mailing address

Go to Settings → Orders and payments → Mailing address. It goes on your invoices and receipts, and at the bottom of the emails you send customers (the law asks for one). A PO box is fine.

2. Tax

In the same place, Tax %. Leave it at 0 if you don't charge tax (most home businesses under $30,000 a year don't need to). Registered for HST? Put your rate (14% in Nova Scotia) and Tax name HST. Orders keep the rate they were placed with.

3. How customers pay you

How to pay: the note customers see after they order, like "e-Transfer to [email protected], answer: macarons". Card payments need Stripe (see Getting paid); without it, customers pay you by e-Transfer or cash and you mark it paid.

4. Where they pick up

Check your pickup place: its name, the area customers see, and what to do when they arrive ("Text when outside"). The exact address only goes to people who ordered. Delivering? Check your Delivery zones too.

5. A test order

  1. Open your shop's link on your phone, not signed in, like a customer.
  2. Order something small with your own email.
  3. Check the email you get, and the order on your Orders page.
  4. Then open it, tap More → Cancel order. Cancelled orders don't count in your books or sales.
